Howl variation across Himalayan, North African, Indian, and Holarctic wolf clades: tracing divergence in the world’s oldest wolf lineages using acous…

2017

Abstract Vocal divergence within species often corresponds to morphological, environmental, and genetic differences between populations. Wolf howls are long-range signals that encode individual, group, and subspecies differences, yet the factors that may drive this variation are poorly understood. Furthermore, the taxonomic division within the Canis genus remains contended and additional data are required to clarify the position of the Himalayan, North African, and Indian wolves within Canis lupus. We recorded 451 howls from the 3 most basal wolf lineages—Himalayan C. lupus chanco—Himalayan haplotype, North African C. lupus lupaster, and Indian C. lupus pallipes wolves—and present a howl ac…

Decoding Group Vocalizations: The Acoustic Energy Distribution of Chorus Howls Is Useful to Determine Wolf Reproduction

2016

Population monitoring is crucial for wildlife management and conservation. In the last few decades, wildlife researchers have increasingly applied bioacoustics tools to obtain information on several essential ecological parameters, such as distribution and abundance. One such application involves wolves (Canis lupus). These canids respond to simulated howls by emitting group vocalizations known as chorus howls. These responses to simulated howls reveal the presence of wolf litters during the breeding period and are therefore often used to determine the status of wolf populations. However, the acoustic structure of chorus howls is complex and discriminating the presence of pups in a chorus i…

Tracing the Cultural Background of Lone-Wolf Terrorism

2021

The end of the Cold War, as well as the collapse of the Soviet Union, posed new greater challenges and risks for the “Global North.” Terrorism—doubtless—seems to be one of them. Over the recent years, and particularly after 9/11, terrorists changed the focus of their attacks. While classic terrorism targeted important persons such as politicians, chief police officers, or celebrities, modern terrorism planned attacks on leisure-spots spaces, tourist destinations, and lay-persons. This is particularly troublesome for policymakers (who are in charge of orchestrating all-pervading models to preserve homeland security) and for field-workers who are seriously punished when they are in contact wi…

2013

The few translators who have attempted a Spanish verse translation of Goethe’s Faust for the most part fail to do justice to the metrical diversity of Goethe’s play and therefore they either altogether give up the idea of rendering Goethe’s play in poetry, e.g. Pedro Gálvez in 1984, or they create a traditionalist Spanish Faust poem with excessive liberties regarding its content, like, in 1882, Teodoro Llorente. Others have tried to fit Goethe’s verse in the Procrustean bed of unrhymed endecasílabos, which has forced them to abridge the original text in numerous passages (Valverde 1963). Moreover, some authors, such as Valverde and Silvetti Paz (1970), translate some passages of Goethe’s ma…

Brief an Garlieb H. Merkel

Iberian Wolf Howls: Acoustic Structure, Individual Variation, and a Comparison with North American Populations

2007

We present a detailed description of the acoustic structure of howls emitted by Iberian wolves and a comparison with published descriptions of North American wolf howls. We recorded and analyzed 176 howls emitted by 11 wolves held in captivity in social groups of 1–5 individuals. Our sample included solo howls as well as howls included in choruses. Iberian wolf howls are long (1.1- to 12.8-s) harmonic sounds, with a mean fundamental frequency between 270 and 720 Hz. Our results revealed striking similarities between Iberian and North American wolf howls in all variables analyzed except for the number of discontinuities in the frequency of the howl, which was lower for Iberian wolves. Using …
